– According to a news report in Raajje.mv (20 May), the Ministry of National Planning had decided to demolish the causeway.
Therefore, the ministry has decided to close the causeway to the public from 21 May 2023 until the ‘bridge’ connecting Madaveli and Hoadedhdhoo island is completed.
– The project is now being referred to as both a ’causeway’, and a ‘bridge’ making it unclear whether it will be one or the other, or both!
– According to the report, the reason for the closure of the causeway is because the ‘temporary bed’ made by MTCC Plc to begin the project was washed away due to bad weather, and the need to acquire more sand.
– As per the report, the additional sand is to be sourced from the existing causeway by demolishing it.
– MTCC Plc was contracted to undertake this MVR 84.17 million (USD 5.5 million) project in October 2021, to be completed within 10 months.
– In May 2023, the project entered its 19 (nineteenth) month, being nine months overdue at this stage.
